Apple Considers OpenAI and Anthropic to Power Next-Gen Siri
Apple is reportedly in talks with OpenAI and Anthropic to integrate their large language models (LLMs) into a revamped version of Siri, according to Bloomberg. The move signals a possible shift away from Apple’s in-house AI development, as the company explores third-party solutions to enhance its voice assistant capabilities.
At Tech AI Magazine, we’ve followed Apple’s cautious yet strategic approach to AI and this development suggests the company may finally be opening up to more collaborative innovation. Discussions are still in the early stages, with Apple reportedly requesting versions of the models that could run on its own cloud infrastructure for internal testing. No final decision has been made. The report comes after Apple confirmed earlier this year that major AI improvements to Siri would be delayed until 2026.
Internally, the company has been reorganizing its AI leadership, with Mike Rockwell taking over Siri development following CEO Tim Cook’s diminished confidence in former AI chief John Giannandrea.
At its recent Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple emphasized subtle AI enhancements such as live phone call translations, rather than launching bold AI initiatives like competitors Google and Microsoft. Still, Apple announced it would support both its proprietary and OpenAI’s code completion tools within its developer ecosystem and a sign it may be softening its walled-garden approach.
For developers and technologists watching this closely or even those exploring the best AI courses to stay ahead Apple’s evolving AI strategy is worth tracking. While Anthropic declined to comment, Apple and OpenAI have yet to respond publicly. Apple’s stock rose 2% following the news.
