TikTok has initiated a limited test of a new feature called “TikTok Short Drama” in the US and select regions, aimed at launching a dedicated mini-drama feed within its app. This new feed showcases a variety of short-form dramas including categories like “Crime Lord,” “Cute Kids,” “One-night stand,” and “CEO.” Notably, some of the top shows in this feed are AI-generated, featuring imaginative content such as AI zombies and animated characters like depressed polar bears and mermaids.
This move highlights TikTok’s strategy to deepen user engagement by diversifying its content offerings beyond user-generated clips into scripted short dramas, blending entertainment trends with cutting-edge AI creative tools. The AI-generated elements illustrate TikTok’s investment in leveraging artificial intelligence for content creation, allowing rapid production of novel, fiction-based entertainment to captivate viewers and potentially extend watch time.
TikTok also partners with third-party drama providers through its minis program, enabling users to access additional short drama series directly within the platform. While initial episodes are often free, users might eventually need to pay to continue watching, indicating a possible future revenue stream.
By innovating with AI-infused storytelling and introducing a new content vertical, TikTok aims to stay competitive in the evolving digital entertainment landscape, expanding beyond its reputation for viral short clips into serialized mini-dramas that can attract diverse audiences and monetize premium content.
