Donald Trump removed an AI-generated image from his Truth Social account that depicted him as Jesus Christ after facing backlash from supporters and critics alike. The image showed Trump in a white robe with a glowing hand on the forehead of a sick man, closely resembling traditional religious art portraying Jesus healing the infirm. This controversial post came shortly after Trump criticized Pope Leo XIV, who had condemned U.S. military actions against Iran and Venezuela. Trump defended the image by saying he believed it showed him as a doctor alongside a Red Cross worker, asserting that the post was not meant to be blasphemous.
The deletion followed widespread criticism, including from some of Trump’s most loyal followers, who found the depiction offensive and inappropriate, particularly given its religious connotations. Prominent figures, including former Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele, described the post as “unserious” and damaging. Vice President J.D. Vance, a practicing Catholic, suggested the image was intended as a joke but recognized it had struck a wrong chord, especially after Trump’s public spat with the Pope.
The incident highlights the complex intersection of AI-generated content and political messaging on social media platforms. It also underscores the sensitivities around religious imagery in public discourse and the potential for AI to amplify controversies when used without clear context or caution.
