FinMin asks banks to adopt MuleHunter AI tool of RBI to check cyber frauds

India’s Financial Services Secretary, M Nagaraju, has strongly urged banks to swiftly implement the MuleHunter AI tool developed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to detect and prevent the use of mule accounts in cyber financial frauds. This call to action came during a high-level meeting convened by the Department of Financial Services, which focused on the growing threat of digital financial frauds and the increasing exploitation of mule accounts by cybercriminals. Mule accounts are bank accounts used as intermediaries by fraudsters to transfer illicit funds, making their detection crucial in combating financial crime.

MuleHunter leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning to identify patterns associated with mule accounts, improving the timeliness and accuracy of detection. The meeting included participation from senior officials of the RBI, law enforcement agencies such as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and police authorities, emphasizing the need for close collaboration among banks and enforcement bodies. As part of the anti-fraud initiative called Operation Octopus, the Department of Financial Services also directed State-Level Bankers’ Committees to inform local police about preventive measures and enhance public awareness campaigns.

The MuleHunter AI tool reflects RBI’s increasing adoption of advanced technology to safeguard the banking sector against emerging cyber threats. Its deployment is expected to significantly reduce financial losses due to cyber fraud, strengthen real-time intelligence sharing, and improve banks’ overall cybersecurity resilience. This initiative highlights the Indian government’s strategic focus on integrating AI-driven solutions to secure the financial ecosystem.
