The U.S. Navy has embarked on a $448 million partnership with Palantir Technologies under a program called ShipOS, aiming to leverage artificial intelligence to accelerate warship construction and repair. This initiative represents one of the most ambitious integrations of AI within naval shipbuilding, touching multiple public and private shipyards and their extensive supplier networks. ShipOS will utilize Palantir’s Foundry and AI platforms to improve scheduling, operational efficiency, and supply chain visibility, directly addressing long-standing challenges in naval ship production and maintenance.
Navy leadership and Palantir CEO Alex Karp jointly announced this project as a transformative step for the maritime industrial base. By embedding AI deeply into shipyard operations, the Navy hopes to increase submarine and other warship production capacity while reducing costs and delays. The program is part of the Navy’s Maritime Industrial Base initiative, aiming to better organize industry resources in support of the Navy’s needs.
Beyond immediate shipbuilding improvements, the Navy views ShipOS as a potential model for wider adoption of AI-powered infrastructure across government agencies. Palantir also holds a separate multi-year $920 million contract with the Navy, underscoring growing reliance on advanced data analytics and software to enhance military operational capabilities. ShipOS may well herald a shift toward AI-native workflows within federal industrial operations, marking a strategic evolution in defense technology and manufacturing.
