Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI and a co-founder of DeepMind, has publicly challenged the commonly held notion of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) as a competitive race with a clear winner. Speaking candidly, he emphasized that AGI is not a trophy to be won, asserting, “there is no winning of AGI.” Suleyman’s perspective contrasts with the aggressive pursuit of superintelligence seen in some industry corners, including OpenAI. Instead, he calls for a focus on developing AI technologies that are human-centric, safe, and controllable rather than chasing an ill-defined superintelligence ideal.
Under Suleyman’s leadership, Microsoft’s AI division is taking a measured approach by prioritizing practical and responsible AI applications. This includes expert-level diagnostics in healthcare, AI companions in education, and innovation in clean energy sectors such as battery technology and fusion research. Microsoft recently formed an internal superintelligence research team, investing heavily in compute power, hardware chip development, and cloud infrastructure, aiming to maintain competitive but ethically guided progress.
Suleyman warns that remaining at the forefront of AI will require “hundreds of billions of dollars” in investments over the next five to ten years, highlighting the intense financial stakes in the AI space. His stance reinforces Microsoft’s role as a leading voice advocating for responsible AI development amidst accelerated global AI competition.
