Meta Platforms Inc. has entered partnerships with three nuclear energy companies—TerraPower, Oklo, and Vistra—to secure nuclear power for its AI data centers, targeting activation by 2030. These agreements represent a strategic move to ensure a reliable, high-capacity electricity supply amid the growing energy demands driven by AI workloads. Specifically, Meta will purchase over 2.1 gigawatts of power from Vistra’s nuclear plants in Ohio and Pennsylvania, supplementing energy for its Prometheus AI data center under construction in New Albany, Ohio. Additionally, Meta’s subsidiary has approval for a 200-megawatt natural gas project to support local data centers.

The decision underscores Meta’s focus on sustainability and energy reliability. Nuclear power offers a stable, baseload energy source that is crucial for powering expansive, energy-intensive AI infrastructure, unlike intermittent renewables such as solar or wind. This contrasts with prior industry trends toward cheaper but less consistent natural gas and renewable energy options. Meta’s head of global energy highlighted the necessity of early investments in nuclear to offset aging plants’ retirements and to drive new nuclear development.

This move makes Meta one of the largest corporate buyers of nuclear energy, reflecting broader tech-sector interest in diversifying and greening power sources for cloud and AI infrastructure.
