Navarro pointed out that AI services like ChatGPT operate from servers within the United States, consuming American electricity to provide these AI capabilities to Indian consumers. This, he argued, represents a financial and resource burden on the US while benefiting India, which raises questions about the equitable distribution of costs amid ongoing trade tensions.
Navarro’s remarks came amid strained US-India relations, including negotiations over a bilateral trade deal and the recent imposition of 50% tariffs on Indian imports by the Trump administration, triggered by India’s continued purchases of Russian crude oil despite US objections. Navarro has also controversially used terms like the “Maharaja of tariffs” and made culturally sensitive accusations that drew a rebuttal from Indian officials, who dismissed his allegations as baseless.
