Why are Americans paying for AI in India?' Trump aide's latest attack on New Delhi

Peter Navarro, a former White House trade adviser under Donald Trump, has reignited criticism against India by questioning why American users are effectively subsidizing the use of US-based artificial intelligence platforms, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, by Indian users. Navarro pointed out that AI services like ChatGPT operate from servers within the United States, consuming American electricity to provide these AI capabilities to Indian consumers. This, he argued, represents a financial and resource burden on the US while benefiting India, which raises questions about the equitable distribution of costs amid ongoing trade tensions.

Navarro’s remarks came amid strained US-India relations, including negotiations over a bilateral trade deal and the recent imposition of 50% tariffs on Indian imports by the Trump administration, triggered by India’s continued purchases of Russian crude oil despite US objections. Navarro has also controversially used terms like the “Maharaja of tariffs” and made culturally sensitive accusations that drew a rebuttal from Indian officials, who dismissed his allegations as baseless.

While Navarro’s concerns focus on the economic implications of AI services delivered cross-border, industry experts note that India’s large user base significantly contributes data that improves AI models, potentially making the technology transfer mutually beneficial. However, this debate highlights broader questions about global digital economy dynamics, national resource sovereignty, and the challenges in regulating emerging technologies across international lines during an era of geopolitical friction.
