India’s AI-based early warning system has significantly contributed to wildlife conservation by preventing elephant deaths on railway tracks. Over the past 22 months, this technology has facilitated approximately 6,000 safe crossings for elephants, mainly in Tamil Nadu’s Madukkarai forest region near Coimbatore. The system employs a network of 12 towers equipped with 24 high-resolution thermal cameras that detect elephant movements within 150 feet of railway lines. Upon detecting nearby elephants, the system instantly alerts forest and railway authorities, enabling timely action to halt or slow trains and allow safe animal passage.

The AI initiative highlights the growing role of advanced technology in mitigating human-wildlife conflicts, particularly along busy train routes where elephant fatalities were previously a major concern. By integrating real-time detection with rapid communication, the system not only safeguards endangered elephants but also improves railway safety and reduces operational disruptions. Inspired by this success, the Tamil Nadu government has expanded its technological approach by launching an AI-powered Command and Control Centre to further enhance wildlife conflict management.

This use of AI exemplifies how artificial intelligence can be harnessed to address ecological challenges and balance development with conservation efforts. It demonstrates a practical, scalable model for protecting vulnerable species in areas where human infrastructure intersects with wildlife habitats.
