The Forest of Dean District Council is investigating artificial intelligence as a potential aid in identifying suitable locations for 5,400 additional homes needed by 2041. According to Council Leader Adrian Birch, the authority has engaged an AI company to determine if the technology can dependably process public feedback on housing development proposals.
The council now faces heightened governmental demands, with mandatory housing quotas recently elevated from 330 to 597 dwellings per year. This adjustment necessitates constructing 5,400 more homes beyond the originally planned 6,600, establishing a comprehensive target of 12,000 residences by 2041.
While development sites for much of the initial 6,600 homes have been designated primarily in Lydney, Beachley, and Newent, officials are reconsidering previous concepts for the additional housing requirements. These include potential developments like a garden community between the A40 and A48 highways near Churcham and a new residential area near the M50’s junction 2.
The council has voted unanimously to reassess its local development strategy and investigate alternative housing approaches, with plans to compare internal analysis against AI-generated findings before determining whether to incorporate this technology into future planning decisions.
