A recent randomized clinical trial conducted at UCLA Health demonstrates that AI-powered documentation tools significantly reduce the time physicians spend on paperwork and may alleviate physician burnout. The study involved 238 physicians across 14 specialties who collectively handled around 72,000 patient encounters. Participants were randomized to use either the AI scribe tools Nabla or Microsoft’s Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) Copilot, or to continue with usual documentation practices. Physicians using the AI tools decreased their documentation time by nearly 10% compared to the control group, translating to less administrative burden after patient visits.
This reduction in documentation time is critical given that physicians often spend up to two hours completing paperwork for every hour of patient care, a major contributor to burnout and work-related stress. By automating the creation of detailed patient visit summaries, AI scribes allow physicians to focus more on patient interactions and clinical decision-making rather than administrative tasks. The study underscores AI’s potential in healthcare not only to improve workflow efficiency but also to enhance physician well-being, which is vital for sustaining workforce morale and quality of care.
With growing physician shortages and increasing administrative demands, these findings highlight how AI documentation tools could become key components in healthcare systems aiming to improve provider experience and reduce burnout, thereby benefiting both clinicians and patients.
