Google has pledged $8 million in funding to support four AI Centres of Excellence in India, reinforcing the country’s efforts to advance its artificial intelligence ecosystem. This funding is being channeled through Google.org, the company’s philanthropic arm, and targets government-backed centers focused on areas vital to societal and economic progress. The supported initiatives include AI applications in healthcare, agriculture, education, and sustainable city development—critical sectors for India’s development agenda.
In addition to backing these AI hubs, Google is investing in projects that enhance AI capabilities for Indic languages, aiming to improve voice recognition and digital governance solutions tailored for India’s linguistic diversity. Grants have also been awarded to startups like Gnani.AI and CoRover.AI, which work on voice and e-governance tools, as well as to academic institutions such as IIT Bombay for creating health governance databases powered by advanced AI models.
This initiative aligns with the Indian government’s vision to promote homegrown AI innovation and make the country a global leader in AI research and application. Google’s full-stack approach—from foundational research to ecosystem deployment—aims to scale AI for broad public benefits and digital infrastructure improvements.
