Rahul Kasanagottu, an Indian-origin engineer at Google, made a remarkable career shift from a customer success role to specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. Despite managing a full-time job and family responsibilities, Rahul dedicated himself to self-study, reading extensively and working on projects to pivot his career. His journey began during his paternity leave, which provided him the opportunity to immerse himself in AI topics. Over approximately two and a half years, he read 11 books, including “Designing Machine Learning Systems” and “Generative AI on AWS,” the latter accompanied by a deep learning course that was pivotal in his early learning. He also devoted hours to watching instructional videos to enhance his skills.
This persistent effort culminated in his successful transition to Google Cloud as a customer engineer specializing in AI and machine learning after interviewing for multiple roles. Rahul’s story illustrates the growing trend of professionals upskilling through self-directed learning to tap into AI opportunities, reflecting the increasing demand for AI expertise in tech companies. His transition also highlights how parental leave policies can inadvertently support career growth by providing uninterrupted learning time.
