In collaboration with AI startup Istari Digital, Blue Origin unveiled an AI-designed lunar vacuum device that extracts heat from moon dust—also known as lunar regolith—to generate electricity. This breakthrough addresses one of the major challenges of lunar exploration: surviving the two-week-long lunar night when solar power is unavailable.

The device works by vacuuming up the fine moon dust and capturing the heat it contains to produce a reliable power source. Istari Digital’s AI platform plays a crucial role by adhering to a strict set of design parameters or “guardrails,” ensuring the lunar battery meets all operational requirements without generating false designs. This capability is essential for operating in the harsh lunar environment where power stability is critical.

Supported financially by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and collaborating with the US government, Istari Digital’s AI technology optimizes complex design challenges and improves energy innovation for space missions.
