NASA’s Perseverance rover recently made history by autonomously planning and executing a safe route on Mars using an AI model for the first time. In a 400-meter drive across challenging Martian terrain, the rover relied on a vision-language AI system to chart its path without direct human waypoint input. This achievement marks a significant advancement in off-planet autonomous navigation, which traditionally depended on operators on Earth to manually plan routes based on satellite images and rover data.
The AI model, developed and tested by engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), leverages generative AI capabilities that combine perception, localization, and path planning.
