Google Gets Pointers From EU Regulators on Helping AI Rivals Access Services

Alphabet’s Google received guidance from European Union antitrust regulators on how to facilitate access to its services for online search competitors and artificial intelligence developers, including access related to its Gemini AI model. This advisory comes under the framework of the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which aims to curtail the dominance of major tech companies and ensure fair competition. The European Commission, responsible for enforcing competition law in the EU, has been working to require Google to open up access to its search data and AI services, thus enabling rival AI providers to integrate and compete more equitably on Google’s widely used Android platform.

EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera highlighted that the proposed measures would enhance choice for Android users by allowing them to select from a wider array of AI services beyond Google’s own offerings. This move marks a significant regulatory effort to prevent market monopolization by Google in AI services and search, helping foster innovation and diversity in digital services across Europe.

The initiative reflects the EU’s broader strategy to regulate Big Tech more stringently to promote transparency, competition, and user empowerment in the rapidly evolving AI space. This ongoing regulatory scrutiny underscores the EU’s role as a global leader in digital market governance and its impact on shaping AI competition policies worldwide.
