YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced plans to expand AI capabilities on the platform in 2026, particularly highlighting new tools that will enable creators to generate Shorts videos using AI-generated avatars. This initiative aims to empower content creators by simplifying video production and encouraging innovative use of AI technologies within YouTube’s short-form video segment, which competes with TikTok and Instagram Reels. Mohan emphasized that AI will be a supportive tool rather than a replacement for human creativity, noting that over 1 million channels used YouTube’s AI creation technology daily in late 2025.
Alongside these advances, Mohan acknowledged challenges posed by low-quality AI-generated content—commonly referred to as “AI slop”—and deepfake videos. To counter misuse, YouTube has implemented measures such as labeling AI-created videos, requiring content creators to disclose alterations, and deploying technology that scans for unauthorized use of creators’ likenesses. Mohan also expressed support for new legislation like the NO FAKES Act, aimed at combating deceptive AI content online.
These moves reflect YouTube’s broader strategy to balance innovation with content integrity and user trust. By fostering responsible AI adoption, YouTube aims to enhance the viewer experience while protecting creators and audiences from misinformation and manipulation. This focus on AI integration and moderation positions YouTube to remain competitive and appealing as digital content creation continues evolving rapidly.
